Of course, she has the same trouble as Bardot and Monroe had - men, who suspended in the lust-dream were unable to show any interest in who the kittenish creature was in her head. Her comment that her life with Lee was like a Fellini film is exact. She reads everything in sight, remembering things and putting ideas together, so she can make something greater out of her chaotic life. They had been married for three years but then had an on/off relationship for many years as they tried to parent their boys in a better way than they had been parented.Īnderson is an autodidact and a poet. But she (famously) left him after he was violent towards her. They quickly had two boys who were and remain the joy of her life. They famously married (she wore a bikini) after knowing one another for four days. ![]()

It’s often said that the twentieth century is the place where tragedy is replaced by trauma, but this novel seemed to me to narrate their convergence, the moment when one creates the other. The tightness of its plotline, the concentration of its ideas, and the beauty of Smiley’s prose forged together into an arrow’s flight into meltdown. The experience of A Thousand Acres suggests I should go back and reread, but then again what gripped me in this narrative was its terrible, claustrophobic trajectory into disaster. It passed in a whirlwind of episodic scenes and characters that left little impression on my sleep-deprived mind. I had read Jane Smiley before, but the novel on that occasion was Moo and, at that time, my son was still very young and demanding. No sooner do I lay down one extraordinary novel than another comes along. ![]() I must say that this American reading challenge has completely transformed my summer holiday reading. ![]() ![]() She is fairly quick witted, and for being someone who is quite by the book, she becomes fairly rebellious when it comes to balancing her love life with her future. Pollan is known for his other best-selling books on human eating habits, such as The Omnivore’s Dilemma or In Defense of Food. What’s more, this habit has connections with our evolution and civilization’s history. ![]() Relying upon corporations to process our food means we consume large quantities of fat, sugar, and salt disrupt an essential link to the natural world and weaken our relationships with family and friends. But, as Michael Pollan rightly points out in Cooked, humans are the only animals that cook their food. Michael Pollan says that cooking, above all, connects us, and the effects of not cooking are similarly far reaching. "Cooked" becomes an investigation of how cooking involves us in a web of social and ecological relationships: with plants and animals, the soil, farmers, our history and culture, and, of course, the people our cooking nourishes. Here, he discovers the power of the four classical elements-fire, water, air, and earth-to transform the stuff of nature into delicious things to eat and drink. In his book, "Cooked: A Natural History of Transformation," Michael Pollan explores the previously uncharted territory of his own kitchen.
