![]() This book in my view is the greatest contribution to date toward the rediscovery and renewal of the Christian contemplative tradition of the Fathers of the Church and the high Middle Ages. The author gathers us into his own spiritual journey to the authentic Source of all true knowledge and compassion. The meditations are, in the truest sense, a school of lectio divina requiring an activity more profound than that of study and intellectual explanation. In the hands of this author of immense erudition and deep contemplation, the Tarot cards of ancient Egypt reveal their universal archetypal symbolic nature and become a school of objective insight. ![]() This may be regarded as one of the great spiritual classics of this century. By way of the Major Arcana the author seeks to lead meditatively into the deeper, all-embracing wisdom of the Catholic Mystery." These symbols are summarized in the twenty-two so-called "Major Arcana" of the Tarot cards. ![]() ![]() "In his foreword to the German edition, Hans Urs von Balthasar writes: "A thinking, praying Christian of unmistakable purity reveals to us to symbols of Christian Hermeticism in its various levels of mysticism, gnosis, and magic, taking in also the Cabbala and certain elements of astrology and alchemy. ![]()

Julian’s innovations become apparent in the long text. Baker first traces the genesis of Julian’s visionary experience to the practice of affective piety, such as meditations on the life of Christ and, in the arts, a depiction of a suffering rather than triumphant Christ on the cross. Inscribing her visionary experience in the short version of her Showings, Julian contemplated the revelations for two decades before she achieved the understanding that enabled her to complete the long text. ![]() ![]() Focusing on Julian’s Book of Showings, in which the author records a series of revelations she received during a critical illness in May 1373, Baker provides the first historical assessment of Julian’s significance as a writer and thinker. The first woman known to have written in English, the fourteenth-century mystic Julian of Norwich has inspired generations of Christians with her reflections on the “motherhood” of Jesus, and her assurance that, despite evil, “all shall be well.” In this book, Denise Baker reconsiders Julian not only as an eloquent and profound visionary but also as an evolving, sophisticated theologian of great originality. ![]() ![]() This result, which orthodox Marxists believe is a principal contradictory characteristic leading to an inevitable collapse of the capitalist order, was held, as a result of various contradictions in the capitalist mode of production, result in crises whose resolution necessitates the emergence of an entirely new mode of production as the culmination of the same historical dialectic that led to the emergence of capitalism from prior forms. ![]() Isaiah and Samuel’s love, which was once so simple, is seen as sinful and a clear danger to the plantation’s harmony. But when an older man–a fellow slave–seeks to gain favor by preaching the master’s gospel on the plantation, the enslaved begin to turn on their own. In the barn they tended to the animals, but also to each other, transforming the hollowed-out shed into a place of human refuge, a source of intimacy and hope in a world ruled by vicious masters. That was the way it was since the beginning, and the way it was to be until the end. Isaiah was Samuel’s and Samuel was Isaiah’s. Just before he slips into death’s embrace, he confesses to the circus overseer that the reason he was so intent on starving himself is quite simple: “I couldn’t find the food I liked.” Indeed, when his popularity abruptly peters out, and he becomes a neglected circus sideshow left to do as he pleases (soon to be replaced by a panther whose body is “furnished almost to the bursting point with all that it needed”), the hunger artist continues fasting and withering away until he is barely discernable from the stalks of dirty straw that line his cage. The sight of the “invalid repast” he is forced to eat every forty days, to the blaring accompaniment of a big band, only fills him with nausea. If it weren’t for the demands of the crowd and a domineering impresario, the hunger artist would go on fasting forever. In Kafka’s “A Hunger Artist,” the story of a man who enthralls audiences with his ability to go without eating for forty days at a time, food is a foe. ![]() |
